Common Causes of a Sensitive Scalp

Having a sensitive scalp could mean a number of different things; you could be prone to dandruff, itchiness, tenderness, or perhaps even psoriasis on your scalp. While you may experience sensitivity in different ways, each concern can have a big impact on your overall feeling of wellbeing. It can be difficult to identify the root cause of your sensitive scalp and you may be left feeling confused or frustrated.

In this article we will be discussing some of the most common causes of scalp sensitivity, and giving you some tips to help care for your sensitive scalp.

Shop for sensitive scalp hair care

How to care for your sensitive scalp

  • Wash your hair regularly with SLS-free shampoo
  • Use gentle, natural hair care products
  • Use warm water to wash your hair, not hot
  • Rinse your hair thoroughly to remove all traces of shampoo
  • Brush your hair gently, starting at the ends
  • Use the coolest setting on your hairdryer
  • Avoid using bleach and other harsh hair dyes

What causes a sensitive scalp?

We asked Green People’s cosmetic scientist, Ian Taylor, to outline some of the most common causes for a sensitive scalp, including some ingredients to look out for in your hair care products.

Synthetic fragrance

While a powerful fruity or floral scent to your shampoo may seem appealing, it could spell bad news if you suffer with a sensitive scalp. Synthetic fragrance is the number one cause of skin reactions to cosmetics, and mainstream hair care products are some of the most heavily scented beauty products on the market.

By law, companies are not required to disclose specific fragrance ingredients used in a product, they can simply state ‘parfum’ or ‘fragrance’ on the ingredients list. This can make it confusing and difficult for people to be sure whether or not they will react to a product.

Green People never uses synthetic chemical fragrance in any product and we provide a FULL list of every ingredient on our website, helping you make an informed choice.

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS)

screen-shot-2017-02-22-at-12-43-51-pm

Another likely cause of a sensitive scalp is the use of harsh detergents in shampoo. SLS is found in the majority of conventional shampoos and body washes and is a known irritant, even for those whose skin isn’t usually sensitive.

Ian Taylor says: “Most detergents have the potential to cause scalp irritation, but some (like SLS) are more irritating than others. This is due to the way that they clean, by allowing water to mix with oils so that dirt can be washed away. As part of this action, the skin’s natural protective barrier can be impaired, increasing trans-epidermal water loss and allowing potential irritants to penetrate deeper into the skin.

To guard against this, it is important to choose gentle shampoos that can remove dirt and grime without stripping the skin of moisture and disrupting the skin’s healthy balance. It is also important that shampoo is thoroughly rinsed away after washing, as even slight traces left on the skin will cause irritation over time.”

All Green People shampoos are SLS-free and use naturally derived foaming agents that are gentle on even the most sensitive skin.

Dying or bleaching your hair

We all know how damaging bleach can be for your hair, and the same can be said for your scalp. Using bleach to colour your hair can cause severe scalp irritation, and even hair loss, as this extremely harsh chemical can totally disrupt the healthy balance of your scalp. Those with a sensitive scalp should avoid using peroxide-based dyes and may wish to avoid colouring their hair completely.

If your hair is already colour damaged and in need of repair, try Green People’s Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. This strengthening duo is enriched with nourishing organic actives from rosemary and green tea to restore vitality, smoothness and shine, while soothing aloe vera helps to re-balance your scalp.

Dry shampoo

While a quick spritz of dry shampoo may be a time-saver in your morning routine, this shortcut can cause problems in the long-run for people with a sensitive scalp.

Liquefied petroleum gas, alcohol (liquid ethanol) and synthetic fragrance are all found in some popular brands of dry shampoo. These synthetic chemicals have little to no affinity with human skin and may cause dryness and irritation for sensitive scalps.

When you wash your hair with shampoo and water, you rinse away build-up on the scalp and prevent hair follicles from becoming clogged with dead skin cells and impurities. Using a dry shampoo causes more build-up on the scalp, simply absorbing excess oils to give the appearance of clean hair. If you don’t wash your hair regularly, hair follicles become blocked which may result in an itchy, flaky scalp.

BAN the microBEADS

Microbeads are really tiny plastic particles usually smaller than two millimetres. The composition of microbeads can vary and often include polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethlyl methacrylate (PMMA) or nylon. Microbeads are added as an exfoliating agent to cosmetics and personal care products, such as soap, facial scrub and toothpaste.

All Helios Health & Beauty brands are FREE from microbeads. Your skin has to last you a lifetime and harsh exfoliation doesn’t support a healthy skin or the natural 28 day skin cell cycle.

FDA Bans Chemicals in Antibacterial Hand and Body Washes

The Food and Drug Administration has washed its hands of the antibacterial products, saying there is no scientific evidence that they are better than plain soap and water.

screen-shot-2016-09-07-at-1-47-10-pm

With a new ban on antibacterial soap, the US government is finally acknowledging that it’s not just ineffective, it’s also dangerous.

Plenty of marketing for antibacterial hand washes and body washes, however, the problem was there wasn’t ever really any science there. For years, researchers have been trying to convince consumers that soap and water does just as good a job as antibacterial products when it comes to protecting you from disease. Worse, some of the antibacterial chemicals have proven ill effects: They contribute to the growth of drug-resistant bacteria, cause health problems by destroying helpful bacteria that live on our bodies, and have the potential to disrupt our hormones and after they flow down our drains, they cause environmental damage to animals and plants.

“Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). “In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.”

All Helios Health & Beauty brands are FREE from triclosan and triclocarban.

SPEICK History & Most Sustainable Company Award

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 9.27.29 AM

An exuberant success story

In 2016, SPEICK family company will celebrate its 88th birthday. The natural cosmetics manufacturer is now in its third generation, managed by Wikhart Teuffel, the grandson of founder Walter Rau.

The company was founded in 1928, when anthroposophist Walter Rau established the ‘WALTER RAU Fine Soap Works’.

As the offspring of the Stuttgart-based family business ‘United Soap Factories’, Rau wanted to continue the soap-making tradition of his parents.

However, this was not enough – he dreamed of manufacturing more than just the curd soap that was popular for washing clothes in those days. His idea was to produce a gentle, natural body soap.

This idea was teamed with a special fascination – Rau was inspired by the unique harmonising medicinal properties of the Speick plant, (Valeriana celtica), which had been prized for centuries. Speick has a calming effect on the central nervous system while simultaneously stimulating the autonomic nervous system.

SPEICK Men Active Shaving Cream, Soap Bowl and After Shave Lotion
SPEICK Men Active Shaving Cream, Soap Bowl and After Shave Lotion

It became his vision to harness the benefits of this almost forgotten plant, and to make them accessible to people again.

A unique product emerged from this fascination and vision: Speick Soap. This natural, extra mild soap was a cosmetic revolution at the time, for body care – as opposed to washing clothes.

Nonetheless, Rau did not want the holistic philosophy behind his product to be limited to its manufacture and sale. Rather, the entrepreneur shaped the whole company according to his own anthroposophical principles and perspective.

Rau wanted to create something of value for people, based on a holistic understanding of humankind and nature. Employees received further training during factory hours, working mothers were offered company childcare and local recreational amenities were created.

SPEICK Men Shaving Cream, After Shave Balsam Sensitive, After Shave Lotion, Shaving Foam
SPEICK Men Shaving Cream, After Shave Balsam Sensitive, After Shave Lotion, Shaving Foam

The company continues to work according to these principles today. “Being seen as a person; being given the opportunity to grow and to learn” – employee development remains important for Wikhart Teuffel today. The founder’s grandson can see how vital it is that “tradition has a future” through the Carinthian Alpine farming families in Austria, who harvest the wild-growing Speick plant. The family farm has been taken over by the next generation and with it, the Speick harvest – by hand, as it has been for centuries. Approximately 1,800 metres above sea level, high up in the Nock Mountains Biosphere Reserve, the Speick harvest ensures that these families have an essential, additional source of income.

Employees of the family business who have visited the Nock Mountains and the alpine farmers that harvest the Speick plant left with an awareness of the finite availability of natural resources, as in the alpine ecosystem of the Carinthian Nock Mountains, and how “being human” is inextricably linked to the natural universe.

SPEICK natural cosmetics today. This is the continuation of a vision held for 88 years, combined with an awareness of the environmental and social fabric which weaves together the family business, the alpine farmers and the Nock Mountains Region.

SPEICK Medicinal Plant

Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 1.14.31 PM

The versatile medicinal and aromatic plant

The fascinating aspect of Speick as a medicinal plant is its balancing effect. In other words, Speick has a calming effect on the central nervous system while simultaneously stimulating the vegetative nervous system. Speick relaxes without tiring and revitalises the body and mind.

Even in ancient times, Speick was recognised as a healing plant and was highly esteemed. The famous doctor Galen cured Emperor Marc Aurel’s stomach problems with Speick steeped in olive or almond oil.

In the Renaissance, in his ‘Kreutterbuch’ [‘Herb book’], the scholar Pietro Andrea Mattioli recommended drinking Speick in wine as a stomach-healing remedy, which also strengthens the kidneys and bladder. Mattioli also described the Speick trade relations to Syria and Egypt via the reloading points Venice and Genoa.

In the middle of the 19th century, Speick was still used very seldomly in Europe, but it was another story in the Orient, where large quantities were exported. In the Orient, valuable Speick oil has always been prized as part of a body care regime. The medicinal plant was applied to the skin with warm baths and massages.

Eventually, the plant fell into complete oblivion in Europe. Walter Rau, the founder of SPEICK Natural Cosmetics, rediscovered the Speick plant and was instantly fascinated by it. He decided to incorporate the healing powers of the plant into a gentle, natural soap for body care: SPEICK Natural Soap.

In 1936, after centuries of overexploitation, the Speick plant was threatened with extinction and was placed under protection.

A scientific study later supported something which the farmers already instinctively knew – that the plant reproduces best of all when a partial harvesting model is used under controlled conditions, which is exactly how our certified biologically regulated wild harvesting is structured.

Rich in myths and traditional soothing

Speick is not only a botanical rarity, it also has therapeutic properties and there are numerous myths surrounding the plant.

Speick is harvested during the “30 Days of Women and Herbs”, which is the time from Assumption Day on 15th August to The Feast of the Holy Name of Mary on 12th September.

In the past, Speick played an important role in the twelve nights between Christmas and the Epiphany and was used as beneficial incense.

Speick is one of the plants that has been given a special role in the ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures to the valley in autumn.

The founder of SPECIK, Walter Rau’s grandson can see how vital it is that “tradition has a future” through the Carinthian Alpine farming families in Austria, who harvest the wild-growing Speick plant.

Did you know that in all SPEICK products we use the harmonising extract of the whole plant i.e. root, stem, leaves and flowers – full potential!
